Operator-independent business phone system – what you need to know
Operator-independent business phone system – what you need to know

You might already know that lynes is operator-independent. Of course, there are PBX systems that are tied to specific operators — especially on the mobile side — and others that let you choose freely.

But what does it actually mean for a PBX to be operator-independent, and what advantages does that give you as a customer?

First things first: What does operator-independent mean?

An operator-independent PBX, as the name suggests, isn’t dependent on or tied to a specific mobile or fixed-line operator.

In the past, most PBXs were locked to one provider — particularly for landlines.

These days, you’re not nearly as limited.

Systems like lynes let you keep your PBX functionality (and many other features) even when you switch operator.

The key benefits of an operator-independent PBX

There are plenty of advantages, but the biggest ones are:

  • You choose which operator — or operators — your company wants to use
  • You don’t have to change PBX (and deal with all the hassle) if you change operator

In practical terms, that means:

  • You have the flexibility to change operator in the future
  • You can change PBX even if your subscriptions are still under contract
  • You can mix operators in the same PBX
  • You can include international numbers in your system
  • You get cheaper international calling
  • You end up with a completely customized telephony solution

Do you really need an operator-independent mobile PBX — can’t you just integrate the mobiles?

There aren’t many solutions that can truly claim to be fully operator-independent.

And some companies have built systems that make it hard to move away. For instance, some still use a fixed PBX with traditional desk phones.

They can, of course, expand their setup and integrate mobile phones — but that often comes with high costs and still doesn’t result in a smooth or user-friendly experience.

That’s why more and more companies are moving to cloud-based PBXs.

With a cloud solution, you can decide whether to use it as a mobile PBX or to add mobiles, desk phones, and softphones.

A cloud-based setup gives you full flexibility — you can add or remove functionality as your company’s needs change.

Why mix operators?

There are several reasons why having multiple operators in the same PBX is a good idea.

One important — and often overlooked — reason is coverage. Different operators simply perform better in different parts of the country.

Example:

You have your head office in Stockholm, branches in Gothenburg and Malmö, and you’re now expanding to northern Sweden. You’ve got 12 months left on your mobile contracts, but your current operator has poor coverage in parts of the north.

Your colleagues up there use a different operator privately — and it works great.

With a traditional, operator-locked phone system, this would be a huge problem.

But with an operator-independent cloud PBX, it’s no problem at all. Just switch the users’ numbers to another operator, and they’ll have the same functionality as everyone else in the company.

You can even choose to show your main company number from your mobile, no matter which operator you use. The result? A much smoother, simpler, and more flexible setup.

Handling foreign operators and offices abroad

If you have offices in other countries, you don’t just call your colleagues freely — international calls can get expensive fast.

You might end up using tools like Skype instead, which just adds another system to keep track of.

With our cloud-based PBX, you can easily connect foreign operators directly into your PBX.

You can use different operators per country or city, just like in Sweden.

This way, you can call your colleagues abroad directly through your own PBX — avoiding high call costs altogether.

Simple, cost-effective, and efficient.

Which operators can be integrated into lynes PBX?

We offer full integration with all operators on the market.

The technology that makes this possible is called MEX (Mobile Extension).

MEX means that both your mobile number and your fixed number are managed through your PBX extension.

From there, you decide where your calls should ring.

You can also choose which number to display.

For example, if you always want your company number to appear when calling from your softphone or desk phone — easy.

Prefer to show your mobile number for internal calls and your main company number for external ones?

No problem. The system is completely flexible — you decide how it works.
